Bringing the Sanxingdui
Discoveries to Life
A
ncient remains explain how
civilizations evolve and become
examples of the ingenuity and beliefs
of our predecessors. But, when it
comes to spread the word about them
and gather the interest of audiences at
home, broadcasters must ensure they
are showcased in an attractive enough
manner, so viewers are engaged with
the information.
Faced with the challenge of
producing a show detailing the new
discoveries in Sanxingdui, one of the
most important archaeological sites
in China, the national television CCTV
relied on Camkoon and Brainstorm
to produce an eye-catching show,
conducted by a combination of real
and virtual anchors, by using a real
presenter along with Daliren, one
of most important culture relics of
Sanxingdui, found some time ago.
Daliren is a copper sculpture, but
it had to be brought to life to interact
with the real person. Camkoon
modelled and animated Daliren
for the sculpture to move, talk and
interact directly with the anchor.
Motion capture and facial capture
systems were combined with Daliren's
skeleton created with Unreal engine,
and Camkoon then used Brainstorm's
InfinitySet to blend all elements
together for the show. On top of that,
Camkoon also used an infrared light
(IR) optical tracking system for the
steady cam to shoot Daliren with
the anchor, ensuring the correct and
accurate perspective matching of all
elements.
Camkoon's complete setup required
just one InfinitySet workstation with
Unreal Engine, so the motion and
facial capture systems sent their data
to the Unreal scene, while the tracking
data from the camera went directly to
the InfinitySet environment. The final
video is the result of combining all the
mentioned elements within InfinitySet.
The final result and the impressive
effects created with such high-end
technology equipment were highly
regarded by CCTV News producers,
who appreciated the impact of using
virtual studio and AR technology to
bring a cultural relic to life, while the
interaction between the real anchor
and Daliren not only was seamless
and impressive, but also ensured
the information was delivered as the
audience focused on the show.
