Survey Shows Political Talk Heats Up the
Workplace
Whether employees are Republicans,
Democrats or registered Independents,
political tension has become a fixture
in offices around the country as the
presidential candidates head to their
national conventions. According to a new
CareerBuilder survey, 30 of employers and
nearly 1 in 5 employees have argued with a
co-worker over a particular candidate this
election season, most often about Republican
nominee Donald Trump.
Managers usually have a clear picture of how they'd
like their company's culture to be, but are they
communicating this to their employees and do their
employees share this vision? New research from
VitalSmarts suggests not.
According to the study, there is a concerning gap
between what managers say they want their company
culture to be and what employees say is really
valued at the organization. While leaders say they
want innovation, initiative, candor and teamwork,
what employees feel is really valued is obedience,
predictability, deference to authority, and competition
with peers.
Employees also view their culture much more negatively
than management. In fact, the more senior a person is
in the organization, the more positive their perception
of their company culture. Bosses are often out of touch
with the day-to-day experience of their employees.
These perception gaps matter-a lot. When employees
believed that what was really valued was obedience,
predictability, deference to authority and competition
with peers, they were:

Other findings include:
* IT employers most likely to argue about candidates,
followed by manufacturing employers.
* More than a third of workers say political correctness
