"The positive benefits of hosting an event like the Reading

According to Dave Kline of the Reading Eagle Company,
WEEU Radio and Pretzel City Productions, LLC, who helped to
organize the race, "Radsport" is a German term for a cycling event
that also incorporates a community festival or celebration, so that
everyone, not just cyclists, have something fun to participate in
which thereby grows a sustainable culture and tradition for the host
community revolving around the event and the bigger picture of
creating positive change and growth. Kline continued, "Reading's
connection to cycling, a solid and storied history going all the
way back to 1863 when we hosted one of the very first national
cycling championships, continues and the future is here now. The
Reading Radsport Festival gives everyone, boys, girls, men, women,
citizens to professional cyclists, a chance to participate as they help
to support the award-winning programs of the Reading Recreation
Commission. Hosting the Reading Radsport Festival will result in
profound socio-economic benefits to Reading, West Reading and
surrounding communities in Pennsylvania's Americana Region as we
all work together to grow the culture of cycling, outdoor recreation,
wellness and entertainment. The festival is comprehensive in that it
also includes something for almost everyone including music, food
and related activities that are fun. The Reading Radsport Festival is
a party that everyone is invited to and it's the latest iteration of our
community's long-standing history and love affair with the sport of
bicycle racing."
In addition to his role in the Radsport, Kline has been an avid
advocate for cycling in our community for more than three decades,
with a focus on rail-trails development, race and event creation,
community outreach, and youth programs for fitness through
cycling and outdoor recreation. Kline previously served on former
PA Governor Casey's Bicycle and Alternative Transportation Task
Force in Harrisburg, PA. He was also the founder and director of the
WEEU Cycle Series, once the largest series of citizens' bicycle races
in the United States, and was honored as the Outstanding Young
Pennsylvanian - Fitness Leader by the Pennsylvania JAYCEES in
February of 1990 for this accomplishment. Kline was also honored
by the President's Council on Physical Fitness for Recognition &
Merit for Outstanding Fitness Program - Arnold Schwarzenegger,
Chairman; George Herbert Walker Bush, President of the United
States of America, in March of 1990.
The Radsport Festival offered $21,000 in total prizes, plus a
$500 prize to the professional rider who had the best combined
result in the hill climb and criterium. This type of cumulative award
for multiple races within the framework of one main race is often
referred to in the sport as an "omnium" event.
Among the major sponsors of the Reading Radsport Festival
were the Reading Eagle, Penn National Gaming, Pretzel City
Productions, WEEU and the Edwin Barbey Charitable Trust.
