MILITARY COLLEGES AND SCHOOLS Great Expectations Riverside Military Academy shapes cadets into scholars and gentlemen. # Situated on 206 acres with a view of the Appalachian Mountains and bordered by Lake Lanier, Riverside Military Academy is one hour from both Atlanta and the Appalachian Trail. Though it was originally built in 1907, this all-male school was completely rebuilt in the late 1990s. Today’s cadets, from grades seven to 12, live and learn on a modern campus with a storied history. Here, Riverside traditions are still a part of everyday life — as new cadets quickly learn during their 30 days of recruit training. The school day begins with reveille at 6:20 a.m. and ends with taps at 10 p.m., and the hours between are full. Formations and passes in review are conducted before breakfast and lunch. Classes start at 8:10 a.m. and end at 3 p.m., followed by a tutorial period, athletic practices and club meetings, and dinner. Two hours are devoted to nightly study hall, after which the cadets have a half hour of free time before lights out. They sleep soundly. “Parents can be assured that each day their boys will eat, sleep, study, march, and sweat,” says Commandant of Cadets Kevin Jarrard, a Lieutenant Colonel in the Marine Corps Reserve. Of course, this military model is carried out in entirely modern surroundings. The Riverside campus boasts fields and courts for all major sports, a natatorium, and facilities for soccer, lacrosse, and rowing. Cadets can participate in a range of military activities on campus, including the drill team, rifle team, and Raiders (a competitive 2001 Riverside Drive obstacle-course team). At Riverside, stuGainesville, GA 800.462.2338 dents’ commitment to excellence in extrariversidemilitary.com curricular activities is apparent in the 80 124 NOVEMBER 2013 usairwaysmag.com member marching band. The Corps of Cadets has won first place over 100 other units four years running in the Atlanta Veterans Day Parade. Riverside is a distinctly American military school with international benefits. The 400-plus cadets include those who arrive needing structure and challenge and those who enroll focused on the service academies. And while there are Georgia accents in the air, there are also voices from a mixture of nationalities and cultures. Half of the cadets come from Georgia, while the other half come from all over the country and the world http://www.riversidemilitary.com http://www.riversidemilitary.com http://www.usairwaysmag.com
