and junior college, you’ll often find students of varied ages in the same classroom. This kind of education model is unique to the institute, and allows students to move through curricula at their own pace and according to their own capability. As a result, cadets are able to achieve their maximum individual success. “It enables us to attract a spectrum of students,” explains Murray. “We can take a student who has been underserved somewhere in their education and use our curriculum to enhance their learning.” And, by the same token, students who excel can seamlessly move up within the NMMI program. “Twenty-eight percent of my high school students are in fully accredited junior college classes,” says Major General Jerry W. Grizzle, president and superintendent. “If you’re that capable, then we move you right up. This year we have a young lady graduating high school and pre-college at the same time.” When classes end, cadets are far from done learning. In keeping with NMMI’s whole-person approach, students must also meet a high standard of physical fitness. Cadets engage in more than two hours of physical fitness every day. Whether it’s practicing with any of the school’s 16 high school teams or nine junior college teams, or working individually in the state-of-the-art Godfrey Athletic Center, students are encouraged — and expected — to meet their fitness goals. Learning to Lead “We focus on every cadet becoming a leader and role model with the understanding of authority, responsibility, and accountability,” says Brigadier General Richard V. Geraci, commandant of cadets. “We can’t teach them about being a leader without experience. They get to practice leading their peers, and then we evaluate them and give them feedback.” Geraci emphasizes that the leadership skills cadets gain through their experience in the NMMI corps impact their lives far beyond graduation. He tells his cadets, “Know the standards, live by the standards, correct those who ignore the standards, help your fellow cadets who are having trouble meeting the standards. If you use that the rest of your life, you are going to succeed in whatever capacity you operate in.” The NMMI road, though perhaps less traveled and more rigorous, is a rewarding one. Students leave the institution not as students, but as leaders What defines our school is the unique learning model based upon developing a liberal education. Development of the whole person carries over into more than just military careers. —Brigadier General Douglas Murray, Academic Dean and Chief Academic Officer capable of critical thinking, able to meet challenging physical demands, and possessing uncompromising character. Ninety-five percent of graduates go on to complete a four-year degree at respected institutions like Stanford, Cornell, and the University of Texas. And NMMI alumni hold leadership positions in every industry, from business to public service, and education to the military. The values instilled in cadets from the moment they step foot on campus stay with them. When students begin their journey at 13 or 14, they see a long and uncertain path stretching before them. Six years later, they are glad to have taken the road less traveled. “It’s the most immensely loyal alumni that you can begin to imagine,” Grizzle says. “I’ve never experienced the kind of 101 West College passion you find in military school alums. Boulevard We become their life, their family.
