Talk to the pilots. It's always good to start with first-hand information about a problem. 2. Take time to fully understand the system's installation. No two systems or installations are the same. The more you know, the better. 3. Use your head before your hands. See point No. 2. 4. Is this thing on? Check that all the switches are on, the volume is set properly and that the circuit breakers are in. 5. Only change one thing at a time. If you're changing boxes, it's counterproductive to make multiple changes at one time. You'll never know which unit is bad. 6. Check antennas, wires and connectors. Corrosion, frayed wires and dirt can cause a lot of performance issues. 7. Is it making the right connection during flight? Engine vibration can play havoc on corroded connectors and cause all sorts of intermittent problems. 8. Fishing for autopilot "porpoising" problems. Maybe it's not the controller or servo. Check the tension on the control cables. 9. Troubleshoot your troubleshooting equipment. Make sure all your tools and test equipment is properly calibrated. As the old saying goes, "You can't hunt if your hound has a runny nose." 10. New spin on gyro system safety. It's strongly recommended that power be removed for at least 30 minutes prior to handling any gyro instruments.
