* Select PROTECT > Redaction > Mark for Redaction, and
the hand tool changes into a Cross automatically.

* (Optional) Double-click an image to mark an entire image.
* (Optional) Hold the pointer over the text you want to
redact and drag a rectangle around it.
* The rectangle will be filled with black color.

o Apply Redactions

* You need to apply the redactions after marking the text or
graphics you want to redact. To apply the redaction, do the
following:
* Select PROTECT > Redaction > Apply Redactions.

* A dialog box pops up to give a warning message and asks
if you're sure to apply the redaction or not. Select Apply
after you've marked all content that you want to redact. The
content is gone forever. Which is one reason it's a two-phase
process, as this step can't be undone. This is also why saving
a backup copy of the original is recommended.

o Search and Remove Text

* You can also search for text that you want to redact in order
to ensure it's removed throughout your PDF document.
Simply do the following:
* Select PROTECT > Redaction > Search and Redact.

* Type the text you wish to redact into the search dialogue
box and select search.
* Check the results you want to redact.

* Click the button Mark Checked Results for Redaction at
the bottom of the search dialogue box.
* Choose PROTECT> Redaction > Apply Redactions.

I have tried some of these tools in the past (most have free
trials), but I have always come back to paying for Adobe Acrobat
Pro as the tool I trust for my use. Acrobat Pro DC is about $15
per month or Adobe Acrobat Pro 2017 download or disc is about
$450 to purchase. Acrobat Pro version XI stopped getting support
including security updates on October 15, 2017, so it is time to
upgrade if you are using Acrobat version XI or below.
Using Adobe Acrobat Pro to redact a document is quite
simple and effective, if expensive. Step by step guides are available

https://lawyerist.com/how-to-redact-a-pdf/. In short, the steps to
redact in Adobe Acrobat Pro DC are as follows:
1. Choose Tools > Redact.

a. The Redact toolset is displayed in the secondary toolbar.

2. In the secondary toolbar, choose Mark for Redaction > Text
& Images.
3. (Optional) To set the appearance of redaction marks, click
Properties in the secondary toolbar.

b. Drag to select a line, block of text, object, or area.

c. Press Ctrl as you drag to select areas of a page in a scanned
document.

5. To apply multiple code entries to a single redaction, rightclick a redaction mark and select an option.

6. (Optional) To repeat a redaction mark, right-click it and
choose Repeat Mark Across Pages. This feature is convenient
if a particular header, footer, or watermark appears in the same
location on many pages.

7. When you have finished marking the items you want to
redact, click Apply in the secondary toolbar to remove the items,
then click OK.
a. The items aren't permanently removed from the
document until you save it.

8. If you want to search for and remove hidden information
in the document by using the Remove Hidden Information
feature, click Yes in the dialog box. Otherwise, click No.

9. Choose File > Save, and specify a filename and location. The
suffix "_Redacted" is appended to the filename. If you don't
want to overwrite the original file, save the file with a different
name, at a different location, or both.
Use the Find Text tool of Acrobat Pro DC to find and remove
words or phrases in one or more PDFs (except encrypted PDFs)
that contain searchable text.
1. Choose Tools > Redact.

a. The Redact toolset is displayed in the secondary toolbar.

2. In the secondary toolbar, choose Mark For Redaction > Find
Text.
3. In the Search dialog box, specify if you want to search the
current PDF or all PDFs in another location.
4. Do one of the following:

a. To search for only one word or phrase, choose Single Word
Or Phrase and type the word or phrase in the text field.
b. To search for multiple words, select Multiple Words Or
Phrase, and then click Select Words. Type each word in the
New Word Or Phrase text field and click Add. You can also
import a text file with the list of words or phrases to search
for.

c. To search for a pattern (for example, phone numbers, credit
card numbers, email addresses, social security numbers, or
dates), click Patterns. Choose one of the available patterns.
You can change the language version of the patterns.

5. Click Search & Remove Text.
