AUTONOMOUS DRIVING
RULES THE DAY AT SAE
In addition to leading the way in standardization for autonomous
vehicle technologies, SAE International is launching a collegiate
competition, AutoDrive Challenge, to cover the educational aspect
of those technologies. At its Pittsburgh-area campus on Oct. 10, SAE
showcased in its effort in a media event called Pathway to Autonomy.
SAE CEO David Schutt, Ph.D., kicked off the event by explaining that
the organization, as "the ultimate knowledge source for automotive,
aerospace and commercial vehicles," has developed a standard
outlining six levels of driving automation. That standard, J3016, "will
continue to serve as the technical and standard development resource
for the future of autonomous vehicles," he said.
"The work and guidance our committees, members and staff are
developing for autonomous vehicles within the various sectors of mobility
engineering affect the safety, manufacturing and ultimately consumer
acceptance of this technology around the globe," Schutt continued.
"With headquarters in the Pittsburgh region, these efforts will have both
direct economic impact as well as national and global impact through
future developments of this vital and useful technology."
SAE's Jack Pokrzywa, Director, Global Ground Vehicle Standards, said
in a statement: "The standards developed through SAE International
have led to significant advances in autonomous vehicles, including selfparking guidance, lane-assist, self-brake technology, and electric vehicle
charging couplers. We anticipate additional groundbreaking standards
for the autonomous vehicle industry and look forward to leading the
country's safe development of the technology."
During the Pathway to Autonomy event, Perrone Robotics provided
autonomous vehicle test drives for media, and SkEyes Unlimited
provided demonstrations on its LIDAR and 3D mapping technology
applied to an autonomous mini helicopter.
The AutoDrive Challenge team from Kettering University of Flint,
Mich., was also on hand to describe its progress in this first year of
SAE's most recently developed collegiate competition. Faculty advisor
Craig Hoff was accompanied on site by three of the team's members:
Noah Lukins, Olivia Wanless, and Alex Rath.
AutoDrive Challenge is a three-year autonomous design competition
organized by SAE International and General Motors (GM). Throughout
the competition, students will focus on autonomous technologies
and allow for modification and testing. They will work with real-world
applications of sensing technologies, computing platforms, software
design implementation, and advanced computation methods such
as computer vision, pattern recognition, machine learning, artificial
intelligence, sensor fusion, and autonomous vehicle controls.
In a related matter separate from the Pathway to Autonomy event,
SAE announced that AutoDrive Challenge has won the AutoSens - Best
Outreach Project award. AutoSens made the announcement on Sept. 20
during its AutoWorld conference in Brussels, Belgium.
The Best Project Outreach award recognizes the work and influence
of education and development projects led by organizations and
individuals on non-commercial communities around the world. For
an industry worth more than $1 trillion, there are still dozens of

individuals and organizations supporting technology
outreach, education and development of young minds
and new ideas within non-commercial communities
around the world in AI, robotics, engineering, software
development, electronics, hardware, software and more.
The AutoSens awards programs seeks to recognize
these efforts.
"This is a tremendous honor," said Schutt. "The
AutoDrive Challenge helps bring together industry and
academia to prepare the brightest young minds for the
future of autonomous technologies. We are proud to
accept this award from AutoSens on behalf of the many
partners, volunteers and supporters who are making the
AutoDrive Challenge a success."
The eight universities selected to compete in the
AutoDrive Challenge are:
* Kettering University
* Michigan State University
* Michigan Tech
* North Carolina A&T University
* Texas A&M University
* University of Toronto
* University of Waterloo
* Virginia Tech
