Clara Kwon is a seonsaengnim.
The Korean honorific for " teacher, " the
students Kwon tutors in STEM and English can't
help but flourish under her tutelage. Kwon is
passionate, curious, and empathetic; she creates
an environment that helps her students thrive.
" Seongsangnim was the word that bridged
my immigration into the English language, "
Kwon wrote in her winning scholarship essay.
" Now, I am that bridge to those I teach. "
Kwon's teaching style leans towards the
organic: " Learning for curiosity rather than the
pressure of needing to learn, " she wrote. " As a
seonsaengnim, I want to influence those around
me to imagine themselves as a child while
pursuing their education: paving creative paths

Although Kwon herself is passionate about education, her experience as an
aspiring coder included more than a few moments of anxiety. In high school,
Kwon repeatedly found herself one of only a few girls in her STEM-related courses.
