SpotlightOnSuccess Franciscan Vistas Ewa “By 2030, the share of older adults in Hawaii is expected to increase, with one out of every five individuals aged 65 or older,” according to Pamela Witty-Oakland, chief administrator of St. Francis Residential Care Community, which oversaw the development of Franciscan Vistas Ewa. In a desire to serve the growing needs of the senior population, the Sisters of St. Francis embarked on this innovative solution, partnering with Stanford Carr Development, LLC as development consultant and bringing on board Alakea Design Group, architect, and Coastal Construction Co., Inc. as the building contractor. Also on the construction team were Albert C. Kobayashi, Inc. (sitework) and Royal Contracting Co. (landscaping). Healthy Home Built on 23 acres that St. Francis Healthcare System of Hawaii purchased from the City & County of Honolulu in 2003, the project consists of six two-story rental buildings with 25 one and twobedroom apartments per building, explains Jim Matsuoka, project coordinator for Coastal Construction Co., Inc. One of the 150 units is designated for the resident manager. Each building has an elevator and 86 | BUILDING INDUSTRY | JULY 2011 coin-operated washers and dryers, with the apartments encircling a garden courtyard, adds WittyOakland. “These features provide residents the ability to live alone, while also creating a sense of community to encourage residents to look after each other,” she adds. “The one-bedroom units are 530 square feet and 750 square feet for twobedroom units.
