Taking
the Floor
Welcome to our Fall edition, where we preview what's to come at BDNY and
highlight projects and people at the forefront of boutique and lifestyle. Read
about AKA's luxurious reimagining of extended stay in Manhattan, courtesy
of Lissoni & Partners (page 92); and see Rockwell Group's interpretation
of the convergence British and Islamic infl uences in a small property in
Granada, Spain (page 96). And on page 26, we delve into Design Hotels'
newly released Further Forward 2024 industry forecast, which touches
upon some intriguing (and unexpected) things to watch in hospitality.
On the cover are the 2023 Up-and-Coming Hoteliers, Shannon Maldonado
and Everett Abitbol-two Philadelphia-based entrepreneurs who launched
the YOWIE hotel in the city they both love. The property is an extension of
Maldonado's YOWIE retail brand, and the hotel, true to her roots, is entirely
shoppable. Find their interview on page 90.
We also spotlight the 2023 Boutique 18 class (page 53). Nominated by their
peers, managers, and mentors, this group of designers who are rising
industry stars. We're celebrating their achievements, along with Maldonado
and Abitbol's, at the Gold Key Awards Gala on Monday, November 13 at
Cipriani 42nd Street in New York to wrap up BDNY.
Speaking of the trade fair, we're excited to welcome the industry back to
the Javits Center on November 12-13. We're building on last year's successes
and hope that 2023 continues to be a showcase of all the talent and design
ingenuity the hospitality industry has to offer. To gear up for the event,
check out interviews with the seven panelists who will share their stories
during the Boutique Design Power Players: Women Leaders in Hospitality
Breakfast and Panel Discussion, presented with NEWH, on page 37. Plus,
we have a sneak peek into the four innovative Designed Spaces (plus
the BD Mainstage) that will come to life on the trade fair fl oor thanks to
brands, design teams, sponsors, and exhibitors (page 8). Passes for the full
