Fremont Indian State Park
and Museum in Clear Creek
Canyon near Sevier, Utah, was
established after artifacts were
discovered while the route for
Interstate 70 was being excavated.
Members of the tour met
with Kevin Taylor, Fremont
Indian State Park Manager, and
Liz Stevens, PhD, the Curator
of Collection and Archaeologist
of the park and museum. Dr.
Stevens guided the members
of the tour along the Parade of
Rock Art Trail and discussed
efforts behind the thoughtful and
intentional process of sharing
the story of the Freemont and
Ute People who left their marks
etched and painted on the canyon
walls. Ranger Taylor talked
about the extensive management
of the property, plus taught the
group how to throw an Atlatl
spear.
The tour also visited Nine Mile
Canyon which has been growing
in popularity thanks to its numerous
rock art panels - nearly
1,000 totaling over 10,000 individual
images discovered so far.
The group was guided by Layne
Miller, Utah Rock Art Research
Association (URARA) member
and site steward.
Ronzoni, of Leave No Trace,
says the aspect of the trip he
enjoyed the most was " the
conversation we had with Utah
SHPO (State Historic Preservation
Office) to learn about the
impacts they are seeing in Nine
Mile Canyon and the ways they
are working with the local community
and tourism entities to
educate visitors about the rock
art and how to protect these
cultural artifacts. "
RECREATION OPPORTUNITIES
Of course, a trip focusing on
bigger themes around outdoor
recreation had to involve some
fun on the trails as well. The tour
visited Eagle Point Ski Resort
at the top of Beaver Canyon, a
recreation entity being protected
by the forest thinning and fire
mitigation work of the U.S. Forest
Service. Here, Mark Tucker,
the founder of Tucker High
Adventure Tours and his team
(mostly his adult offspring and
their families) gave the group
some options to explore the area.
" We have a fleet of Polaris RZR
all-terrain vehicles as well as a
few e-mountain bikes. " The group
split between the two recreation
options and explored some of
the Piaute Trail and neighboring
trails.
The mountain biking team of
five covered about six miles of the
designated trails of the ski area.
The powerful Bakcou e-mountain
bikes made riding uphill feel
flowy and fun giving the members
of the tour a chance to cover
more ground and enjoy the view.
The ride down was exhilarating,
even on the heavier bikes.

The three-day tour covered a
lot of ground and information
and the delegates confirmed
they appreciated how much they
learned. This tour is one of the
three pillars supporting an initiative
collaboration between Visit
Salt Lake and Outdoor Retailer.
The BWP program brings outdoor
recreation leaders together
to build relationships and learn
about opportunities centered
on land management strategies,
outdoor recreation, conservation
programs, climate impacts, and
stewardship.
" The entire trip was spectacular
and I enjoyed each aspect of
the tour. " Ronzoni said, " The
wealth of information provided is
substantial, offering valuable insights.

and immersing yourself in these
communities provides a chance

to forge profound connections.
This experience can be highly
inspiring and further fortify
your commitment to your own
endeavors. "
Timmer, a Utah resident,
agreed, " The tour provided a
unique opportunity to network
with other folks in the industry,
as well as gain extra context into
some of the recreation areas I
have been visiting for years. By
joining a BWP trip, you learn
things about our state that not
many people have the opportunity
to and see parts of central
Utah that many people drive
past. "
" It was inspiring to see how so
many different organizations and
regions across Utah are successfully
collaborating to implement
shared goals together. It would
be interesting to include more
businesses that are working to
solve a similar challenge in order
to iterate on solutions along the
way, " Renn said, " This was a
great opportunity to learn about
a wide-range of projects and programs
across Utah while taking
in all of the beautiful sites and
history along the way that make
this place so unique. "
The other two pillars of the
BWP are service and giving.
The service component was
manifested in the Leave it Loved
project at the Wheadon Farmland
Preserve this past June after
the Outdoor Retailer Summer
show. Volunteers helped with
the removal of cheatgrass, one
of the most invasive species in
the Intermountain West. Details
on the giving component will be
identified soon.
