Integrating Over-the-Counter (OTC)
Hearing Devices in Your Practice

Session Description: The Over-the-Counter (OTC) Hearing
Aid Act of 2017 will change hearing device distribution in the
United States so that patients can purchase hearing aids
designed for mild to moderate loss without the need to see an
audiologist or hearing aid dispenser. After the implementation
of the law, prospective patients will be inundated with marketing from large corporate vendors. In an effort to ensure optimal hearing care that complements the new law, practices will
be faced with the challenges of educating prospective patients
on the capabilities of OTC devices, offering support services,
and managing the sales of OTC devices. This panel will
explore successfully incorporating OTC devices into a practice. By 2060, the number of Americans with hearing loss is
projected to double to nearly 76 million, and hearing loss is
associated with negative health outcomes such as social isolation. Despite this, less than 20% of individuals with hearing
loss pursue hearing aids. OTC hearing devices may represent
a gateway opportunity to reach patients to achieve better hearing. In this panel discussion, an otologist, an audiologist, and
2 administrators will discuss how to best mange the assimilation of OTC devices into a practice. The panel will focus on
the cultural changes needed to adopt devices for your otolaryngology partners, audiologists, and clinical support staff.
The panel will provide input on a wide variety of topics,
including identification of patients, clinical and administrative
staff training, and procurement and inventory management of
devices. The panel will also explore patient and referring physician marketing, technical support for the devices, and reimbursement for sales.
Outcome Objectives: (1) Describe methods to assimilate the
use of OTC devices into current practice. (2) Identify strategies
to market and engage patients using OTC devices to complement comprehensive hearing care. (3) Apply the proposed steps
toward building a long-term relationship with each patient.
Know Your Worth: Choosing the Practice
Environment That's Right for You

Session Description: Government, academic, and private
otolaryngology practices can be rewarding career paths. How
do otolaryngologists decide what the right fit is for them, and
how do they understand the value that they bring to the

institution or practice that they are joining? Surgeons finishing
training typically have to make this important decision without in-depth experience in either practice environment. Even
providers that have been in practice for years often do not process a true understanding of the value that they add to their
practice environment. This lack of knowledge about compensation plans in different practice environments can make it
challenging for surgeons to self-advocate during the hiring or
promotion process. Base salary, incentive pay, sick/parental
leave, support staff, and clinical and operating room allocation
are only a few of the factors that can affect overall compensation. Dr Robin Lindsay, a busy academic facial plastic surgeon
and a member of the Professional Equity Committee of the
Joint Committee on the Status of Women at Harvard Medical
School, will moderate a panel of experts in compensation plans
in several practice environments. Dr Jamie Litvack will discuss compensation plans within the Veterans Affairs (VA)
Health Administration. Mr Robert Glazer as the chief executive officer of ENT and Allergy Associates runs a busy private
practice group. He will discuss compensation models in the
private practice setting. Dr Michael Stewart will discuss compensation plans for an academic department. The group will
discuss the similarities and differences between these practice
settings to provide insights and lessons learned when starting
in VA, academic, and private practice environments. The panel
will provide pearls about how to make these environments successful depending on the providers' goals.
Outcome Objectives: (1) Describe the opportunities available for otolaryngologists practicing in a VA, academic, and
private practice environment. (2) Compare different practice
compensation plans. (3) Define ways to prepare and negotiate
their compensation plan to align with the providers' goals.
Leadership Lessons: Strategies for Success

Session Description: This session will offer advice on important aspects of leadership and résumé building. It will address
the analysis and understanding of personality traits, tips on
how to be prolific in scientific publications, negotiating skills,
and emotional intelligence. The purpose of this session is to
discuss strategies to develop your skills as a leader.
Outcome Objectives: (1) Recognize personality types and
use this knowledge to lead and collaborate and to understand
emotional intelligence. (2) Learn negotiation skills and techniques to meet your contractual needs. (3) Use techniques on
how to be prolific with scientific publications.
