The Intersections of Our Lives

On any given day and at any given time, my life intersects
with what is in our world: people, pets, material things, the
newspaper, social media posts, etc. And at every intersection
I make choices related to how I navigate or live out that
intersection. Sometimes the choices I make in response to the
intersection are by habit, sometimes the choices are intended to
keep me within my shell or bubble, to not allow the intersection
to affect me, and sometimes the choices are reaching out and
opening myself to my surroundings.
How we navigate or respond to the times and places where
our lives intersect with our world, particularly the people in our world, determines the
character of our communities and our congregations and demonstrates who we are.
When we work with or intersect with congregations and clergy, our challenge is to
do our best to be RIGHT in our relationships. One congregation contacted us during a
time of leadership transition. We helped the congregation complete a congregational
assessment process which revealed the fact that there had been a long standing conflict
going on in the congregation. At our recommendation, the congregation engaged in a
structured listening activity which created a safe space for people to share. For the first
time, people on opposite sides of the conflict heard one another and heard, sometimes
with emotion, how the factors in the conflict affected their lives. As a result, the
congregation felt a sense of hope, both in facing this conflict and in their ability to
engage with one another around differences.
Another way we " intersect " with the lives of others is through our Ministry
Assessment Program. This program helps denominations with their due diligence
in the process of licensing and ordaining persons to leadership roles by providing
a psychological assessment. In our efforts to be RIGHT, in our writing of the
report we submit, we try to honor each individual who goes through the process by
acknowledging and affirming who they are. When we review a draft of the report with
the person involved, it is not unusual to hear the comment, " it is hard for me to admit
it and what is in the report is true about me. " One person, at the end of the process,
thanked those of us involved for being welcoming and affirming of who they are-
something that they haven't always experienced.
W hether our intersection is with an individual or a congregation, we strive to create
a welcoming, affirming, hopeful and safe environment to allow for the possibility of
learning, growth, reconciliation and new life.
