Florida to Add
Vegas-Style
Casinos?
Two state senators from Florida recently
filed legislation that would allow five
Las Vegas-style casinos to open in the
state, according to the Sun Sentinel.
Under the legislation, one casino (or
“destination resort”) would be permissible
in each of five districts across the
state.
The article notes that the casinos
would require approval by local referendum,
and that the Seminole Tribe
of Florida (which operates the only
existing casinos in the state outside
of South Florida and pays for exclusivity)
and the state’s pari-mutuels plan
to oppose them. Each casino would
include at least 50,000 square feet
of meeting and convention space
and 1,000 hotel rooms, and would be
unable to commit more than 10 percent
of its square footage to casino space.
Legislation co-sponsor Dennis Jones
says estimates show the casinos could
attract 5 million out-of-state visitors as
well as large trade shows, according to
the article.
“Right now we’re not a major player
in the trade show industry,” Jones said.
“And if the Legislature thinks this bill
is worthy, they’ll help move it along. I
just believe in it.”
