An Explosion of Opportunities
Some firms have charged hybrid employees with
growing their businesses into related markets, and,
in turn, offering even more diverse opportunities
for their staff.
Steven South, IIDA, LEED AP, a Senior Associate
at Perkins + Will and IIDA NY Chapter President,
is one of several resident "futurists" at P+W's New
York office. South, who is a Senior Interiors Project
Designer, first started working in a "futurist"
capacity when he applied for a grant through P+W's
Innovation Incubator program, (which offers
stipends to employees), to research trends in
technology and social media in the workplace.
He wanted to consider how trends like augmented
reality, life hacking, social media, crowdsourcing
and cloud computing affected the built
environment, and started collaborating with
others in the NY office and firm-wide. He's since
built upon the grant, and is working with several
colleagues to develop different ways to look at
the integration of technology and the workplace.

"One of the things I'm working on is a new service
that would incorporate design technology into the
built environment," South says. "We're on the verge
of where the virtual worlds and real worlds will
intersect-it's great for Interior Design. There will
be an explosion of opportunities for designers."
South sees the nexus between the physical
and digital worlds as key to the future of design,
referring to it as the "Age of Internet Integration."
He points out that, today, most people's
initial engagement with a new organization
is through the Internet, which offers designers
a unique opportunity.
