(left position). As the sensor line continues to move, the local
peak of the voltage profile is tracked continuously until it
appears for the last time (right position). This measured movement
path of the local peak during a sensor line movement is
defined as the peak trace (PT) [14].
According to Hunke et al. the peak trace is a feature for object
localization with a moving sensor line, which is inspired
by the concept of motion parallax [14]. The PT-width becomes
larger when the object is placed further away and smaller for
closer objects. Therefore, a dependency between the PT-width
and the vertical distance from the sensor line to the object can
be deduced, as shown in Fig. 6c.
In addition, Hunke et al. evaluated the center of the PT [14],
as shown in Fig. 6d. For all different vertical distances, the center
of the PT corresponds to the x-coordinate of the object, also

known as the lateral displacement. Both features in Fig. 6c and
Fig. 6d are independent of the object size (radius), therefore,
with a moving sensor line no estimation of the object size is
possible.
Discussion
In this work, the weakly electric fish Gnathonemus petersii was
used as a biological template. The two-dimensional sensor array
of these fish is reduced to a one-dimensional sensor line.
Surrounding three-dimensional objects were replaced by circular,
two-dimensional objects, and the field forming dipole
was pulled apart and the resulting monopoles symmetrically
placed at both ends of the sensor line.
The main goal of this work was to identify features of the
voltage profile on the sensor line for the determination of
