AHEPA Opens Emergency Relief
Fund for Natural Disasters
Supreme President Jimmy Kokotas called on AHEPA members to mobilize
and authorized the Emergency Relief Fund to be opened in an effort
to provide humanitarian assistance for the victims of Greece's wildfires
and Hurricane Ida.

" The images and stories that came out of Greece in late July and
August were terrifying, " Supreme President Kokotas said. " Our thoughts
and prayers are with all who have been affected by this tragedy. We are
extremely grateful to Greece's first responders and to all nations that
have offered support and assistance. We will stand with Greece as we
did in 2007, 2018, and during other times of great need. "
As they have in the past, Ahepans heeded the call and stepped up to
assist in any way possible. As monetary donations poured in, Ahepans
also volunteered their time and resources by donating bottles of water
or by contributing to actual fire relief.
Stateside, Hurricane Ida came barreling through the Gulf, leaving
devastation in her wake in Louisiana and causing severe flooding
and tornado damage in the mid-Atlantic up to parts of New England.
AHEPA is working with the District 16 AHEPA family to determine how
we can assist those affected by the hurricane to help them recover.
At the Athens Supreme Convention, AHEPA presented a donation
of 159,000 Euros, funds raised following Greece's wildfires of 2018, to
Evangelismos Hospital for the completion of a burn unit. AHEPA also
announced a $50,000 donation to the League of California Community
Foundations to help support California wildfires relief.
In 2007, AHEPA transported 270 care packages totaling $250,000
worth of goods and raised an additional $250,000 in financial assistance
for victims of Greece's wildfires.

Greeks Beam with Pride for
Giannis Antetokounmpo
Then-Supreme President George G. Horiates issued
the following July 21, 2021, statement following the
dominant performance of Giannis Antetokounmpo in
the NBA Finals that led to a Milwaukee Bucks championship:
" Today,
Greeks from around the world are beaming
with pride. We congratulate Giannis Antetokounmpo
for a dominant performance to lead the Milwaukee
Bucks to the team's first NBA Championship in 50
years, earning well-deserved NBA Finals MVP honors
and joining elite NBA company.
" Giannis's story from humble beginnings is the
story of our immigrant forebears. He embodies the
fulfillment of the American Dream in the 21st century.
" At 26, he has become a global superstar and role
model. The sky is the limit for him. We wish Giannis
continued success on and off the court. "
Antetokounmpo is a two-time recipient of the
prestigious AHEPA Harry Agganis Most Outstanding

In 2013, AHEPA condemned a racial slur directed at
Antetokounmpo by the then-leader of Greece's Golden
Dawn party soon after the Milwaukee Bucks drafted
Antetokounmpo with the 15th overall pick. AHEPA's
statement received placement in the Milwaukee
Journal Sentinel.
