INSTEAD OF SIMPLY CREATING A MISSION STATEMENT AND READING IT TO PEOPLE, THE ORGANIZATION WENT THROUGH A FULL VALUES CLARIFICATION EXERCISE WITH ITS STAFF, NARROWING THESE VALUES DOWN TO FOUR THAT DEFINE THE ORGANIZATION AND ITS PURPOSE.
Principle #1: Do More with Less Cash to Throw at People
We all know that money is tight. And with less money, it seems like there is less that we can do. According to Lublin, though, we can do more with less cash if we operate according to a principle based on recognition, not payment. According to over 35 years of research by James Kouzes and Barry Posner, authors of The Leadership Challenge (2007), money isn’t what keeps people committed to your cause or your organization. As Lublin explains, an emotional connection to and deep understanding of your core mission can keep good people
committed to your organization: “People want to do something meaningful with their lives, and they want corporations to do something meaningful with their work.” All too often, organizations short-change their employees by assuming money to be the primary driver of loyalty and productivity. What we need to do instead is figure out what gets our employees out of bed in the morning – and then give them more of it. The housing and residence life program at the University of Southern Indiana in Evansville has long been an organization that strives to connect every staff member, regardless of level, to the fundamental
purpose of their organization. Instead of simply creating a mission statement and reading it to people, the organization went through a full values clarification exercise with its staff, narrowing these values down to four that define the organization and its purpose. The vision and mission statements were developed in a shared format and were based on these values. Every decision, according to Laurie A. Berry, director of housing and residence life, is made based on one simple question: “Is this (program, service, renovation, etc.) in line with our values and our vision?” If the answer is yes, then the organization moves forward. If the
