AS A DESIGNER who's known for designing 'green' or sustainable interiors,
I'm constantly asked what's new out there in the green design arena. Lately,
it's been a challenge to try to find a product that's NOT considered green, as
pretty much every manufacturer claims to have a sustainable message. Some
of these messages are pretty sketchy and have no real backing to substantiate
what they claim, so I spend a lot of time doing research and continue my
quest for beautiful, sustainable products with which to design. I'm happy
to say there's no shortage of them, and the future holds endless possibilities.
A BRIEF HISTORY

As a young girl coming of age in the hippie era of the 1960s, going green
comes naturally to me. Starting with the Rachel Carson's book Silent Spring
in 1962 and onto the first "Earth Day" in 1970, my consciousness about
sustainability was raised. As I crafted my interior design career, I decided to
try to incorporate as many organic or recycled materials that I could.But what
a long, strange trip it's been.
Twenty years ago,the only (arguably) green product available at the time was
bamboo flooring. It was a real challenge to find any mainstream products that
had any green content. As climate change came into our collective consciousness, a need to feel like we were doing something to help our planet moved us

forward, and manufacturers began to realize that
'green' was good. They could save money by eliminating factory waste and also use their sustainability
message as a marketing tool.
IMAGINE THE POSSIBILITIES
Today, there are literally hundreds of green products that are mainstream. Now you can easily
purchase a WaterSense-labeled faucet or toilet at
the local home center, as well as plywood or insulation made with no added urea formaldehyde and
low or no VOC paints. It's still the tip of the (still
melting) iceberg, but with the advances in digital
printing, LED lighting and with smart technology rapidly improving and evolving, the interior
design of today is a whole new animal.
So what's new in green design today that is innovative and different? It's not just about recycled
or organic products anymore. Today's green
design message is one of performance, with
