The new Rodney Yip
Award in Science will
recognize a fourth-year
undergraduate student

response, Yip says his overarching direction is
relevancy. "Relevancy is absolutely crucial for
Ryerson students, and keeping the public focus
on Ryerson is important to me."
Besides his endowment contributions, Yip is also:
* a strategic advisor for Ryerson's Network
Centric Applied Research Team (NCART)
* a mentor in the Science Discovery Zone
* on the Dean's Advisory Council for the
Faculty of Science
* on the Ryerson University Alumni
Association's Board of Directors
* an advisor within the Office of the VicePresident, Research and Innovation (OVPRI)
He also focuses on exciting new ventures -
like The Canadian Public Safety Innovation
Network. A collaboration between Ryerson
University, University of Ontario Institute of
Technology (UOIT) and Durham Regional
Police, the group develops tools, policy and
processes to support first responders.

FOR RODNEY YIP, who graduated from Ryerson's
Computer Science program in 1982, alumni
giving involves a whole lot more than writing
the odd cheque.
Recently retired from IBM Canada - with
more than 30 years of business continuity,
disaster recovery and emergency management
experience - Yip got reacquainted and started
giving back to Ryerson shortly after he retired
in 2015. Why Ryerson? Yip says he values
Ryerson's hands-on approach and wants to help
out. "When I graduated in 1982 that was very
valued in the private sector and contributed
significantly to my success."
His involvement continues to grow. He
recently founded the Rodney Yip Award in
Science. This endowed award will be given out
for the first time in the fall of 2017 to a fourthyear full-time undergraduate student within the
Faculty of Science who demonstrates academic
achievement and has financial need.
While his involvements often relate to
science, computer science and disaster
