Garmin
" For pilots and operators, it can take a lot of time
and effort to make sure the aircraft is always ready for
flight. Garmin is here to help make it simpler, " Jim
Alpiser, the company's director of aviation aftermarket
sales, told attendees
to open his company's
presentation for
its newest product,
PlaneSync.
PlaneSync offers
a system that
PlaneSync connected aircraft
management system
automatically updates
avionics databases,
logs flight and engine
data and allows aircraft
owners and operators
to remotely check fuel
and systems status
via Garmin's Pilot
electronic flight bag
app. The system is
available for both
forward-fit and retrofit applications and uses a 4G LTE
cellular or Wi-Fi connection provided via Garmin's
new GDL 60 datalink. PlaneSync targets streamlining
an aircraft owner's pre-flight and post-flight activities
duties, plus downloading to the aircraft database
updates and uploading logged flight and engine data.
The system is compatible with other Garmin products,
including select Garmin integrated flight decks. It's
also available aboard new-production aircraft, including
the Daher TBM 960 and Piper M600 SLS.
The GDL 60 datalink combines LTE cellular service,
Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity in a remote-mounted
box serving as the airplane's link to transmit and
receive operational data. According to the company,

features include active/standby database status, as well
as Hobbs, tachometer and flight times, fuel quantity,
battery voltage, OAT, oil temperature and aircraft
GPS location. " The GDL 60 offers Garmin Connext
compatibility and can also act as an interface to a GSR
56 satellite transceiver, allowing pilots to utilize inflight
text messaging or initiate voice calls.
" PlaneSync is expected to be available in the third
quarter of 2023, " Alpiser told attendees.

Genesys Aerosystems
Genesys Aerosystems is a well-known provider
of integrated avionics systems for military and civil
customers, both as stand-alone equipment and as part
of an integrated cockpit solution. Its VFR and IFRapproved
autopilot solutions are available for both
fixed- and rotor-wing aircraft of many aircraft makes
and models.
Big news from the company at the 2023 AEA
Convention included a joint effort with Airbus
Helicopters to develop instrument flight rules
capabilities for the single-engine H125 series. The
company's Helicopter Suite will be certified aboard
the Airbus H125, allowing operators to expand
the helicopter's mission capabilities in all weather
conditions, by installing dual IDU-680 EFIS displays,
VHF nav/comm digital aviation radios, a Genesys IFR
helicopter autopilot, dual redundant ADAHRS and dual
GPS/FMS, among other equipment.
The 6-by-8-inch IDU-680 displays offer operators
high-resolution LCD glass depicting 3D synthetic
vision, highway-in-the-sky flight-path management,
enhanced HTAWS terrain awareness, an integrated
FMS, four-axis hover capability and many other
features, all of which meets a long list of standards and
TSO requirements. The joint STC project is scheduled
for completion by the second half of 2024, with first
operations likely aboard factory-new H125s delivered
in North America. Follow-on approvals are expected
in other countries
allowing single-engine
IFR operations.
