Carrie's life has been punctuated by tragedy, and
unfortunately, she was never given the support
systems she needed to learn how to manage her
illnesses. But she has put in hours and hours of
work to learn new habits and news ways of thinking, and she now has a phenomenal psychiatrist
and medication. This all helps her recovery.

She says her son, Grayson, keeps her fighting. "I
know that no matter what, suicide is not an option,
because I could never purposely do that to him."

But mental illness is a constant struggle, one that
employers must recognize.

If you are not walking in someone else's shoes,
you do not get to have an opinion on what they
are going through. Judgment without context is
a low-EQ behavior. There is a saying attributed to
the philosopher Plato: "Be kind, for everyone you
meet is fighting a harder battle."

"Even in the last week, I have been super depressed," Carrie says. "It's a thing that doesn't
go away. You can be on medication, but you still
have to do your own work, and some days you
don't feel like doing anything."

Shortly after talking with Carrie, I completed
mental health first aid to be better prepared to
help my team members who suffer from mental
illness. I encourage you to help reduce the stigma
in your workplace, too.
