Utilities around the world are looking for new solutions
to optimize the existing electric grid to accelerate and
accommodate the historic energy transformation that is
underway. To utilize our existing transmission grid to its
full potential many utilities are currently deploying Grid
Enhancing Technologies to make the existing grid more
efficient, flexible, and resilient.
We are rapidly moving to an electrified and renewablepowered
future, however, our electric grid was designed and
built in a different era when the demands were vastly different.
Grid operators are facing the challenge of maintaining
system reliability on their aging grid infrastructure while
integrating record levels of renewables and mitigating risks
associated with increasingly severe weather events.
This panel will explore state-of-the-art digital technologies
such as power flow controllers, dynamic line rating
systems, and IIoT technologies that are being deployed to
maximize capacity, increase efficiency and enhance the
reliability of today's electric grid.
The panel will also discuss industry and policy themes
that are developing, including how a variety of utilities
are already integrating the technologies and how policymakers
at FERC and in the US, Congress are working to
promote the utilization of grid enhancing technologies.

Impacts of Recent FERC Regulatory Actions Regarding Dynamic
Line Ratings

In early 2021, FERC issued a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking
(NOPR) on managing transmission line ratings. This
proposed ruling would require transmission owners and
operators to implement some form of dynamic line ratings
(DLR), at a minimum considering ambient adjusted ratings
(AAR). Traditionally line ratings have been primarily static
with seasonal adjustments, leaving excess capacity under
most conditions. Dynamic ratings can change throughout
the day to allow usage of the excess capacity under most
conditions but may actually result in lower ratings in some
scenarios. This panel will discuss a number of impacts to
utilities and system operators including aspects such as:
system planning with less predictable and more variable ratings,
economic benefits and costs of DLR implementation,
considerations of applying AAR vs full DLR, and the implications
of DLR/AAR for system reliability and resiliency.
