Chapter 4-26 Can My Vehicle Be Registered Off-Road Vehicles Conversion to a Motorcycle Registration of Converted "off-road" Motorcycles: The Massachusetts Registrar of Motor Vehicles may register a two or three wheeled vehicle as a "motorcycle", as is defined in M.G.L. c. 90, s. 1, that was originally designed and built for "off-road use" only. The Registrar will only authorize such registration if she is satisfied that: * the applicant is the owner of the vehicle (acceptable documentation must be produced), and * the vehicle has been converted to such an extent that it meets acceptable safety standards for use on public ways in Massachusetts as set forth in 540 CMR 4.06 (Procedures for Inspection of Motorcycles) Massachusetts law required inspection of a motor vehicle after it is registered. However, as indicated above, the Registrar will not authorize a converted "off-road" motorcycle to be registered unless she is satisfied that it can pass an inspection for motorcycles registered for "on-road" use. Consequently, a converted "off-road" motorcycle must: * undergo a preliminary examination by the Registry Inspector who will determine if the converted motorcycle appears equipped as required by law and is likely to pass a motorcycle inspection at a licensed MA Motorcycle Inspection Station after the vehicle is allowed to be registered. (See regulations 540 CMR 4/06), and * if the applicant is required to bring the converted "off-road" motorcycle to a specific site where the RMV Inspector can examine the vehicle, it must be transported there on a trailer or on a truck. 4:196
