Chapter 4-12 Passenger Plates - Car-Sharing Passenger Plates for Car-Sharing Organizations Vehicles with business markings have to be registered with commercial plates. There are two exceptions to this law: * Vehicles owned by certain non-profit corporations * Vehicles owned by certain car-sharing organizations On May 22, 2010, a law was passed that allows car-sharing organizations to register their private passenger vehicles with passenger plates. What is a Car Sharing Organization A car-sharing organization is a membership-based vehicle rental business in which a fee paying member can rent a vehicle online for a specific time period. The member then picks up and later drops off the vehicle at a designated location. There is no formal written rental contract and rental clerks are not involved in the process. One example of this type of business is "Zip Car". The rental vehicles owned by these organizations may have business markings. They can be registered with passenger plates as long as the business markings are limited to the organization's name, address, telephone number, logo or web address. 07/10 4:56
