entertainment, brought to us each evening on the
television, was steeped with variety shows, including
stars like Flip Wilson and Sonny and Cher.
Mattel had been struggling in the early 1970s,
having problems with over-production, excess
stock, and a lawsuit with the Securities and
Exchange Commission, all of which had pushed
the company into austerity mode. Starting early in
the 1970s, fabric for their fashion dolls was ordered
at a such a high quota that the fashions for each
doll (Barbie, Ken, Francie and Skipper) had to be
made in all the same fabric. Tooling for Playsets
for Barbie, clad in orange and yellow plastic,
were utilized for the action figure, Big Jim, only
manufactured in black and brown.
During this time there was a shift in culture, and
it was time to update the Barbie doll. Beginning in
1976, with change on the horizon, prairie dresses
and granny gowns were over - glamour was back!
This was the year that a new head was sculpted for
Barbie as the main line doll for 1977. Created by
Joyce Clark, Barbie's new face had a smile, showing
her teeth, slight dimples and a pleasant look. She
was given new arms that were permanently bent at
the elbow. The doll was dressed in a hot pink satin
gown and named "Superstar Barbie." She came
with a matching boa, star-shaped posing stand, and strappy
high heels that buckled at the ankle. It was the first new shoe
mold created in years. Barbie's counterpart, Christie, was
released at the same time, dressed in yellow, with coppercolored hair highlighting her black tresses. Barbie was not
the only update for that year - the Ken doll was given a new
sculpt as well - sculpted blonde hair, Hollywood smile and a
swivel-style neck.
Superstar Barbie was ready for a guest appearance, with
a line of very glamorous fashions created simultaneously
with names like "Brocade Shine for TV Time." She embodied
glamour, and the play pattern for the doll changed from
an outdoors-y adventure to being glamorous at the disco.
