Jackie is also one of the first, if not the first, African American celebrity doll to be made. It is also one of the very few Black celebrity dolls manufactured. In fact, not until the decade of 1970-1980 was there a movement to present dolls of African American celebrities. The Shindana Company of Los Angeles, CA made a line of dolls during this period, which was part of the Operation Bootstrap program, giving jobs to inner city Blacks. In 1949 though African American dolls of any type were only merchandised in largely Black communities. Like Jackie Robinson himself, his doll broke that color line and was available in all toy and doll stores. DOLL NEWS * ufdc.org 57http://ufdc.org
