Desafíos de protección de microrredes del CEP de North Bay
Al diseñar una microrred, se esperan desafíos de protección porque la red no se diseñó inicialmente para admitir
microrredes. En el caso de la microrred del CEP, los principales desafíos al diseñar un plan de protección sólido
incluían los siguientes elementos:
✔ corriente de falla bidireccional y variable
✔ restricciones de exportación de potencia
✔ la necesidad de una operación de protección rápida
✔ una capacidad para detectar eventos de los servicios públicos con prontitud
✔ proteger de forma confiable el equipo contra el cierre fuera de fase.
La microrred del CEP de North Bay es la primera de su tipo en Canadá. La complejidad de la microrred requería
una protección de microrred sofi sticada y confi able. La protección de la microrred es uno de los componentes más
críticos de la microrred en general. En todos los sistemas eléctricos, la protección es responsable de detectar y aislar

Limited, se propuso implementar la primera microrred a escala de servicios públicos de Canadá,
completando el proyecto en 2019. La empresa de North Bay, Ontario, quería construir una red más
resiliente para apoyar a la comunidad en caso de una emergencia. Junto con la comunidad, el desarrollo
de la microrred ayudó a formar un centro comunitario que beneficia a la ciudad de North Bay durante
eventos normales y de emergencia (véase la figura 1).
Se proporciona un diagrama unifi lar simplifi cado de la microrred del Community Energy Park
(CEP) de North Bay en la figura 2. La microrred tiene dos puntos de interconexión con el sistema de
servicios públicos local que proporciona un suministro redundante resiliente a algunas fallas en la
línea ascendente o en el transformador. Solo uno de los dos interruptores de interconexión de servicios
públicos (CB1 y CB2) se cierra en cualquier momento. La microrred suministra electricidad y calor a
tres instalaciones: el YMCA Aquatic Center, Thomson Park y Memorial Gardens. En caso de emergencia,
estos edifi cios sirven como un espacio de reunión que puede proporcionar refugio a los miembros

Para garantizar que la microrred pueda mantener operaciones independientes de la red, la microrred
incluye las siguientes fuentes de energía distribuida (FED):
✔ dos generadores de gas natural combinados de calor y potencia (cogeneración), cada uno con capacidad
nominal de 265 kW
✔ un sistemas de almacenamiento de energía por baterías (BESS, por sus siglas en inglés), con una
capacidad nominal de 250 kW de CA, 274 kWh
✔ sistemas solares fotovoltaicos (FV) por un total de 8 kW de CA.
En este artículo, las FED están defi nidas por la defi nición del Estándar 2030.7 del IEEE: " Fuentes
y grupos de fuentes de potencia eléctrica que no están directamente conectadas al sistema eléctrico
de gran porte; incluyen tanto generadores como tecnologías de almacenamiento de energía capaces de
exportar potencia " . Las FED de microrred suministran una potencia eléctrica máxima de 788 kW. Los
cogeneradores también producen energía térmica, que se utiliza para calentar las instalaciones de la
comunidad.
La microrred es capaz de operar conectada a la red (interconectada con el sistema de servicios
públicos local) y en modo de isla (separada del sistema de servicios públicos local). La microrred puede
realizar una transición continua entre estos dos estados operativos tanto durante eventos planifi cados
(p. ej., el operador iniciando la transición manualmente) como no planifi cados (p. ej., fallas del sistema
de servicios públicos externos mientras está conectado a la red). Esta característica permite que los
edifi cios del CEP mantengan sus suministros de potencia críticos, incluso cuando la zona circundante
